To solve problems in rural communities that are far from metropolitan abundance, Cambodians have had to ‘make-do’ by improvising with whatever resources they have on hand; a resilient approach that has been hard-wired by generations who have had to endure the hardships of deprivation and war.

This book of short observations and collections reveals the ordinary and unusual objects created by Cambodians.

I have divided this book into eight, roughly bundled, interconnected worlds: the body, architecture, Buddhist art, food, death, nature, signage, and spirit worlds.

Each page includes a photograph and a description of an individual artifact or action, and occasionally, describes the production process or the workshop where the objects were made.

Sometimes the artifacts are isolated from their context to allow a greater focus on their physical properties, such as a sugary donut or an inflated swan, while sometimes, I contextualise the objects to their workshop practice. To reveal the links to Cambodia’s colonial past, I have also included some historical photography.

Here a current list of bookshops, giftshops, and hotels across Cambodia that currently stock Photography in Cambodia:1866 to the Present, and in February 2026, Ordinary Cambodia: Cactus, Angels, Eggs and Donuts.
